What Makes a Good Life?
Show Notes Transcript

The question, "What makes a good life?" has plagued philosophers and intellectuals for millennia. It is one of, if not the most important question for our species.

Everything we do is driven by our desire for a good life. And yet, despite doing our best to have a good life, we're often left feeling unhappy and dissatisfied.  If we give in to every urge and impulse, we may find ourselves sick and miserable. If we resist every desire for pleasure, we may feel fit but mentally deprived.

So what is the balance? What is the actual secret to a good life? Why has the answer to this question been so elusive? And most importantly, why does doing the things we think would lead to a good life, often leave us more miserable than we were before? I answer these and many more questions in this important podcast episode.

The path to peace, love, health, and happiness starts here.

0:50
we all want a happy life, we want a life that is peaceful, safe and joyful.

1:09
Depending on who you ask, there will be different answers to what makes a good life.

1:18
If you ask a Coca Cola executive, they'll say Coca Cola, open happiness. If you ask a rich person, they may say money. If you ask a drug addict, they may say drugs. If you ask a holy man who lives in a cave meditating, they'll tell you nothing. Get rid of everything. And you'll be happy.

2:06
If you ask a neurologist, they may tell you, it's a certain combination of chemicals in the brain like endorphins and dopamine, that makes us have a good life. And so they will prescribe medication that can boost those levels in a person.

2:32
However, every single one of those examples are different people's ideas of a good life, not an actual good life.

2:49
And they are ideas of what a good life would be based on a very specific circumstance, money, drugs, isolation, brain chemicals, and any life that is dependent on specific circumstances are only going to be temporary, fleeting moments of pleasure. Drugs can obviously lead to pain and suffering.

3:37
The cave the holy man was living in could be purchased by a developer. And the mystic could be thrown out onto the streets. And every single one of these examples the lifestyle choices stemmed from feeling not whole.

4:07
Like there was a missing part of them like happiness lied in the circumstances.

4:15
And that fallacy is the cause of so much suffering. And instead of trying to have a good life, we realize that life is good.

4:34
This is the way to have lasting peace, love and joy that can never be taken away by anything external because you are life itself. When we experience that inner joy, that inner peace all,The rest of life becomes clearer. And we understand exactly what we want our highest intentions not based in fear not based in trauma.

5:15
But with courage, openness and love.

5:19
We no longer look for people or things to make us happy, because we're already happy, and people will want to come to us to figure out that secret.

5:36
It's attractive and magnetic. We can enjoy the pleasures of the world. Without becoming addicted without longing and craving.

5:50
We don't have to forego the pleasures of life. And we don't have to over indulge either. We can simply enjoy all of the beauty and majesty of this world. We can enjoy friends and family as they come and go as all people do.

6:13
We can follow our dreams without attachment to the outcome, and just enjoy the journey. Because life is already good. And when we realize that, then whether we're building a family or we want to live alone whether we live in this place or that place, whether we have that career, or a different career, or we even change careers, periodically.

6:53
Life will be good, because it's not dependent on any temporary, fleeting, constantly changing situation.

7:05
And as we give up the need for other things to make us happy. When we realize that loving, joyful energy within us will naturally want to share that with others. And then we will realize that truly the greatest joy on this earth is bringing joy to others. And as we do that, we will know deep down that we will have lived a life worth living.
