What to Do If You Feel Burnt Out at Work?
Show Notes Transcript

Burnout is the result of self-sabotage in the moment at the expense of ourself in the future. We think if we just work a little harder, if we just push ourselves and stretch ourself a little more, that we'll eventually reach the success we want and have the happiness we need. In reality, we're sacrificing our mental and physical health that will only result in a major setback when our brain and body say, "Enough!"

Here I'll talk about a few ways we can work smarter, always stay centered and rested, and even get more done.

Hello, and welcome to path to peace with Todd Perelmuter. I am your host, Todd Perelmuter, we have all experienced on some level burnout. That feeling where we have been working so hard for so long, sacrificing our mental wellness, and sometimes our physical wellness, to reach a goal or to meet the demands of our job or our responsibilities.

1:17
And over time, that lack of sleep, or that accumulated stress, build up and build up until it explodes like a volcano. And when that happens, we are practically useless and dead to the world we just cannot go on, we need a major change whether it's a huge vacation, or we just need to quit and take some time off.

1:54
Ultimately, that burnout, that hard work gets undone because we now have let this need to relax recenter and recharge, build up and build up until we just can't take it anymore. And we have to quit or take a lot of time off.

2:15
Most people in order to manage their stress, manage their excessive work hours, will blow off steam at a bar drinking, which only ends up making us more rundown, more tired, less energized, less vibrant.

2:38
Nobody wakes up after a night of heavy drinking, feeling amazing and rejuvenated. Yes, it can help us escape our problems for a little bit. But they're still there. We haven't actually dealt with them. We haven't actually released any stress.

2:57
But quite the opposite. We've put extra stress on our body. Other people may turn to eating junk food or sugar or other kinds of unhealthy behaviors to cope with the stress. This again leads to more physical stress on our body and leads to greater inner conflict, which further drains us of our energy.

3:27
Some people will escape they're here and now by consuming entertainment, watching TV or movies may be spending a lot of time on their phones, which again, leaves all that stress undealt with and some people even dive deeper into work and work becomes their avoidance strategy for dealing with stress.

3:59
Now there are a lot of beneficial ways that some people turn to to process their stress, such as working out, going dancing, and these are very healthy and positive stress relievers. They release endorphins in the brain and boost a lot of those happiness chemicals.

4:25
They are very fulfilling activities that make our lives worth living and are wonderful ways to temporarily reduce our stress. But if still going into the office or going to work wherever it is, still creates so much resistance and inner conflict and stress. Then it's only a bandaid on the problem.

5:00
To get to the root cause of burnout, we really need to spend a little time every single day recentering recharging, re energizing ourselves, which all come from meditation, and can come from yoga, or certain types of breathing techniques, these things that allow the brain and the body to be still, and allow that mind to sink into stillness as well.

5:34
This is so important to fully recenter to really not just give our bodies arrest from sleeping, or naps or taking a break from work, but really allowing our mind to rest from thinking, we all can probably relate when we're really busy in our lives, we have a hard time shutting our mind down. This can lead to insomnia, as well as anxiety, depression, and burnout.

6:09
And by meditating for just a few minutes a day, we remind our mind that it is okay to stop that we don't have to be 24/7 thinking about something, figuring something out, working towards something. And no matter how busy we get, if we can give a few minutes should just sitting with no activity, just allowing our mind to just do whatever it wants. And we're just sitting in peace and quiet.

6:46
Without focusing on work, and just trying to be fully present. We tell ourselves subconsciously, that we are not so busy, that our lives are not so chaotic. And we bring peace into our day and into our lives by doing this. But meditation also does something else. It trains our mind during the rest of the day, to be more present, to be more focused on the task at hand. So we can perform better, because we bring a calmness and a clarity to our work.

7:35
And in doing this, we don't create new stress. Because things come up, and we deal with it without stress without negative reactions. It's just, here's what needs to be done now. And we do it. It's like the difference between when a person who's afraid of bugs has a bug land on them, and they scream and a horse when a bug lands on the horse. And it just without even moving any part of its body brushes the bug away with its tail. It doesn't change its facial expression.

8:17
It doesn't scream, it doesn't gallop off. It just brushes the bug away, calmly. And it'll do that as many times as the bug lands on it. And it never gets frustrated. It's just in its natural state, responding to whatever comes up with peace and joy, and never having its mental state disturbed.

8:44
This is the way of nature. And this is our true nature. And we can only get back to it by giving our minds that time to rest. And by giving our bodies that time to recharge and recenter so that nothing builds up, and that there is no volcanic eruption of rage and stress. And all it takes is just a few minutes a day. It can be multiple times a day. You can do it for 20 minutes, an hour, but just giving your body and mind some stillness and allowing all of those chaotic thoughts and activities we do. Time to dissolve from our body and mind.
