The Best Meditation for Calming Inner Voice
Show Notes Transcript

Some people have such a loud voice in their head, that they are actually unaware they have a voice in their head at all. It's gotten so noisy and constant, that we don't even have the awareness to hear it because we are completely lost in our thoughts. In those cases, only when a person sits down to meditate and they actually turn their attention inward, do they discover the presence of this unrelenting voice.

This voice is inside of us, and yet we cannot control it. It's like having an alien visitor living with us. And what do you do when you meet an alien visitor? You make peace with it. Your work together. And then eventually, you become best friends who only exist to help each other. In this episode, I'll share they key for turning that loud negative voice into your personal helper.

Hello, and welcome to path to peace with Todd Perelmuter. I am your host Todd Perelmuter. When we are meditating, to calm the inner voice in our head, we try and try to force it to stop thinking. But it oftentimes just gets louder and louder and louder.

And this is because we can't always force the mind to think what we want. But we can learn to direct the mind into being more peaceful, generating more peace and joy by focusing on things that bring us joy, specifically, the present moment. And this is what meditation really does for us.

Because whether you're focusing on your breath, or a mantra or your body, you're focusing on the sensations in this moment. And it is a doorway, to the present moment where we're not lost in our thoughts. We're fully aware, awake, and alert to what is happening in the present moment.

When all of your attention is on the present moment. You're listening for the sounds of this moment, and understanding and looking carefully at all the sensations you're picking up from your five senses, then you can't be listening to your thoughts because you're listening to what's happening in the moment.

And when our minds are extra, jumpy, and chaotic, and unfocused, jumping around from thought to thought, being that monkey mind constantly grasping at new things to fixate on, it can be especially difficult to focus on something as subtle as our breath, or the sensations in our body.

And I encourage anyone who's having trouble with this, especially beginners into meditation, to not start with your breath or your body. If your thoughts are very chaotic. And you're having a hard time focusing, I recommend spending one to a few months easing your way into meditation, or to just calming your chaotic mind with a mantra, not a mantra that actually means anything.

Because then you're just thinking, one thought, and in breath meditation, you're trying to think essentially no thoughts. But with mantra, you're thinking more of a sound, you are using this mental sound, to be a vehicle to shooting into the present moment, in a much easier way because you are putting this sound into your mind instead of creating the absence of sound and thought you're become you're giving your mind a focal point, which is very powerful and very easy to do for beginners and creates a very pleasant experience.

So often, when we meditate, thoughts come in, and oftentimes they're like, don't meditate. Why are you doing this? This is pointless. Aren't you bored? I'm so bored. And so it's super important to begin in a non forced way into practice in an enjoyable way. And this mantra is the best way to do that, that I have found for myself and people I know.

And I'm just gonna give you a very simple mantra you can use. It's not Oh, it sounds like a word, but it's just a meaningless sound. And it's your ring, your ring, your ring, and you just say that to yourself, why a r i n g. It simply has a nice ring to it, and allows enough sound diversity for your mind to latch on to.

And then eventually you develop this singular thought, the sound and then eventually, after one or three months, or you can do this for the rest of your life, and get amazing benefits and focusing your mind on a single point, concentration, and joyfulness and peace that come with it. If you choose to, after a few months, move on to breath, or body awareness, where you are sending your consciousness outside of your mind and into the real space where you can increase your awareness of subtle sensations.

Be able to become more aware of what thoughts come into your mind, which is why this is called Mindfulness meditations. Then you're welcome to you know when you feel right, and that can be different for everybody. always best to follow the middle path. Don't push yourself too hard where you quit. Oh, ultimately, and don't be too lazy where you don't get any benefits. Find that middle path that's right for you. And let me know how it goes. Peace and love.
