Is Meditation More About Being Aware of My Inner World or Outer World?
Show Notes Transcript

When we meditate, where is the best place to put our focus? Within or out? This is a common question and the answer isn't as simple as one or the other. Mindfulness is about becoming aware of both. But if that's the case, how do we divide up our attention between the two?

Sometimes we can be so lost in our mind that we are completely unaware of our surroundings. Other times, we can be so busy in our activities that our mental and physical health can suffer. So where should we put our attention? In this episode, I share the answer to this important question and the key to raising our awareness both within and out.

Hello, and welcome to path to peace with Todd Perelmuter. I'm your host Todd Perelmuter. Today, the question is, is mindfulness more about being aware of my inner world, or outer world?

Mindfulness is about being aware of awareness itself. It's not about your inner world or your outer world, although we do become so much more present in both of them, and aware of both of them. But we direct our attention wherever it's needed, when it's needed. And there is always this awareness of our own awareness of ability to know where we're focusing, shift our focus, and to keep our focus, sometimes will be fully aware of our thoughts, and our body and our heartbeat, and our breath, and our mood and our emotions.

And sometimes we'll be interacting in the world. And we'll be fully focused on what we're doing, fully present and alert, in the here, and now. When we're going for a nature walk, we can be fully immersed in nature, fully aware of every little sensation and all the beauty around us.

And when we have a mental task, we can be fully present, in our mind, fully focused with clarity, and our higher wisdom, because we are the awareness of our thoughts, not the thinker of our thoughts. If we were fully present in the world, we would not be healthy, emotionally, mentally, and perhaps even physically. If we are fully present, within, we cannot interact with the world, we cannot achieve success in our lives, each of us will have a balance of where we put our attention, both externally and internally.

And we will each have a different level of balance. Some people are much more introverted, and reflective. And some people are much more outgoing, and doers. And the world needs, the doers and the thinkers. And what mindfulness will help us do is simply raise our awareness, no matter what it is, we're doing, whether we're closing our eyes and turning all of our attention inward in meditation, or we're playing sports, where we need to be fully alert and present in our outer world.

Whatever it is, awareness helps those situations by not allowing ourselves to get lost in those situations, to not get distracted in those situations, to be able to intently focus on whatever we're doing in this moment, with heightened awareness, higher consciousness, and greater focus, so that it wisdom arises, so that clarity arises and so that we can be our best version of ourselves. No matter the situation at all.
