Can I Meditate without Focusing on Anything?
Show Notes Transcript

Today, Todd talks about whether or not we can meditate while focusing on nothing. The thing is, being unfocused is just our normal state of mind. We typically go about our days just responding to whatever we perceive and whatever thought pops into our head. We are a slave to our impulses.

Learning to focus, by practicing focus, is taking control of our mind. It's using your intentions to guide your attention, not reacting unconsciously to every shiny thing that steals your focus. Hear more about how to focus, and unfocus, in meditation and in life in today's podcast.

Can I meditate, without focusing my attention to anything, there are no doubt many different types of meditation. And each one has its different set of benefits. And one of those things is focus and learning to focus and mastering the power of our own concentration, not letting the mind just wander aimlessly, but really developing the ability of our mind to concentrate to focus on whatever is happening in the present moment, and the peace that comes with that. So it's possible if you want to focus on nothing in your meditation, or rather, not focused on anything. But the way I got cut up, there's because the

truth of the matter, that you can't focus on nothing.

1:28
Because you can't not focus on something, even if you try to focus on empty space, you're still focusing on something. And so you either do it with consciousness, or you allow your mind to leap and wander aimlessly and incessantly and in a way that disturbs peace, as long as we are conscious beings, receiving sense perceptions from either our surroundings, or from our body. Internally, we are always receiving new information. And we cannot turn off our awareness of what's happening around us. And so since we can't block out everything, because we are consciousness observing, we might as well practice training our mind

to generate feelings of peace, joy, love and gratitude, through being able to control our mind with focus and intention, rather than falling into negative thoughts, generating negative emotions. And being able to tame and control your own mind. This is freedom over the ego. So it's not that you can't do meditation, and just try not to focus on anything. But it's such a great opportunity and benefit, with so many great changes that you can see in your health and your happiness from doing so. So I just encourage you to try that.

Mantra is a great way to start and is very easy and pleasurable experience. And focusing on just that one word or a couple words or sounds or whatever you like. And then after a period of time when you feel comfortable in like you have a good daily practice that's consistent. Try moving on to breath meditation, where instead of focusing on a sound, we clear our mind of a repetitive mantra, and we just focus all our consciousness on our breath.

And that is a beautiful practice

to learn mindfulness and heighten our awareness of the subtlety all around us, and the nuances in the middle paths. Thanks so much for listening. This has been path to peace with Todd Perelmuter. I'm your host Todd Perelmuter.
