Why Has Meditation Turned Me Sad?
Show Notes Transcript

Sometimes, when we first start meditating, sadness and other extreme emotions may feel like they're being stirred up. But, these emotions aren't created by meditation, they are revealed by meditation. Most of our lives are spent distracted. We're always so busy doing, we don't pay any real attention to our inner world.

In this episode, Todd goes into why these emotions come up in meditation, how we can process what comes up in meditation, and why they are A-OK. Because they, like all phenomenon, are only temporary. And only by looking at them, healing from them, and processing them, can we move on to releasing them.

Hello, and thank you so much for listening to path to peace with Todd Perelmuter. I'm your host Todd Perelmuter. And today, I'm going to answer the question, why has meditation made me sad and emotional?

0:41
Well, meditation is simply the removing of all external distractions, turning our attention inwards. It doesn't make us anything, it reveals our state of mind.

0:57
Are we patient or impatient? Are we agitated or relaxed? Without any outside stimulation?

1:06
What is our internal state? Are we happy and at peace? Are we anxious and stressed? This is just checking in. And so many of us spend most of our lives so busy, we're always working. We're always

1:23
trying when we're not to work to just relax with some entertainment or with friends.

1:30
And almost every moment of our lives

1:33
is taken up with some activity. And so we can often not ever heal from any kind of trauma or stress or loss in our lives, because we don't process it because we avoid it. And it just sits under the surface affecting us in so many ways. And sometimes physical health, and sometimes mental health, sometimes how we deal with our relationships.

2:04
And so we really need to think these thoughts that we're having a meditation that may be sad and emotional. And it's good to let them come up to the surface and let them evaporate. But if we don't deal with them, if we don't feel them if we don't observe with them and sit with them, until there's no more agitation from looking at it and being with it, and we can let it go completely.

2:29
It'll just sit under the surface and fester. And as meditation always does, once the healing has happened, a great peace and inner joy will emerge.

2:46
Hope that helps. Thank you so much for listening, peace and love.
